HMRC have published guidance on the introduction of VAT on private school fees. It is advisable that private schools review the guidance and start planning accordingly ahead of any further announcements that are made in the Budget on 30 October 2024.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has launched a digital tool to help businesses estimate what registering for VAT may mean for them. The VAT Registration Estimator has been developed after feedback from small businesses suggested an online tool would be helpful to show when their turnover could require businesses to register for VAT and its effect on profits.

HMRC have amended VAT registration information relating to non-established taxable persons (NETPs) in VAT Notice 700/1. An NETP is any person who does not have a UK establishment. The rules regarding VAT registration can be complex, especially for overseas sellers of goods via an online marketplace.

Tax authorities increasingly require overseas businesses to register for and charge local VAT/GST on their B2C supplies of ESS.

In the Autumn Statement Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced that the VAT registration and deregistration thresholds would be frozen for a further 2 years from April 2024. The current thesholds of £85,000 (VAT registration) and £83,000 (VAT deregistration) have now been in place since April 2017.
